Who We Are
Our Direct Instruction story started in 2016 when we were among the first teachers in Dorset to pilot and implement Siegfried Engelmann’s Direct Instruction programmes at Magna Academy. After researching Engelmann’s foundational research, we began delivering DI directly to our classes. We immediately saw the transformational impact on our most disadvantaged pupils, witnessing remarkable progress in academic attainment, improved classroom behaviour, and a noticeable shift toward positive learning attitudes.
World Literacy Award Finalist 2025
In 2025, the Direct Instruction Hub UK was selected as a finalist for the prestigious World Literacy Award, centred around the theme “Bridging Literacies – Connecting Worlds.” The international conference brought together leading experts to address post-pandemic youth illiteracy and explore innovative integrations of digital learning tools to raise reading outcomes across communities.
We share a deep, personal commitment to closing the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers. Direct Instruction proved to be the exact vehicle needed to achieve this mission. Crucially, our experience over the years has shown that DI is not merely a catch-up tool for students with learning gaps, it is a world-class, high-fidelity instructional programme that elevates learners across every ability tier.
Accredited NIFDI Partnership
To ensure our implementation meets the rigorous global standards of DI, we underwent comprehensive coaching with the National Institute for Direct Instruction (NIFDI) to become accredited coaches. Over the years, we have collaborated with Kurt Engelmann and the NIFDI team in the US to bring the latest international practices and highest quality standards to UK schools.
In January 2020, Suzy Wybrow established the Direct Instruction Hub UK. Today, we are proud to be the UK’s leading DI implementation specialists, having delivered CPDs to over 300 schools and maintained ongoing partnerships with leading Multi-Academy Trusts, including United Learning, Greenshaw Learning Trust, Lionheart Educational Trust, Astrea Academy Trust, and Advantage Schools.
Our core role is providing first-class support and coaching, script modeling, and quality assurance support for schools embedding DI programmes. We feel honoured to continue endorsing the monumental legacy started by Siegfried Engelmann over 50 years ago, supported by our key partners and visionary leaders.
